Description
Immature fuzzy Common Gallinule having just emerged from lake.
The Common Gallinule inhabits marshes and ponds from Canada to Chile. Vocal and boldly marked with a brilliant red shield over the bill, the species can be quite conspicuous. Adults have olive-black backs (separated from their blue-black bodies by a white line), the white patches under the tail and their red bill which has a yellow tip. It sometimes uses its long toes to walk atop floating vegetation. This species was formerly called the Common Moorhen and is closely related to moorhen species in the Old World.
Common Gallinule will eat almost anything available for consumption, including small fish, earthworms, insects, plant matter and even birds’ eggs. It usually obtains its food from the water surface when swimming or when walking on emergent vegetation, although it will occasionally dive or dip the bill under the water to upturn floating leaves and feed on any attached invertebrates.
