Colorful Atala Butterfly in South Florida on twig of a a green plant, with a morning dew drop ahnging down from twig.
The Atala butterfly, Eumaeus atala Poey, is the largest and most iridescent hairstreak in southeastern Florida.
The Atala butterfly occurs naturally in subtropical southeastern Florida. The butterfly is also found in the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Cayman Islands, and Cuba. The outer surface of the folded wings of both males and female Atala butterflies are deep black, bordered around the edges with three curved rows of iridescent ultramarine spots. The underside of the hindwing also displays a large bright red spot and the abdomen is red-orange.
